About Selfridges

After coming to the UK from his native city of Chicago in the US, Harry Gordon Selfridge founded the Selfridges retail business in 1908. The flagship Oxford Street Selfridges store in London originally opened in 1909, becoming the UK’s second-largest store after Harrods. John Lewis bought several smaller Selfridges stores over the years, and the Sears Group acquired the company in 1965. However, in 1998, Selfridges de-merged from the Sears Group and opened its second major store in Manchester Trafford Centre. Following the success of this store, another opened in Manchester’s Exchange Square in 2002 and Birmingham’s Bullring in 2003. The same year as the latter opening, Galen Weston bought the chain and formed the Selfridges Group.

The success of Selfridges is due to the innovative marketing strategies created by Harry Gordon Selfridge, which were copied by other department stores all over the world. Rather than being just a store, Selfridges prides itself on being a social and cultural icon, selling a lifestyle instead of just products. Shopping at Selfridges is all about luxury and leisure, with the latest designer fashions, accessories and homewares available. Fun fact: in the 2017 film Wonder Woman, set in 1918, Selfridges makes an appearance when Diana goes shopping in the store to find contemporary clothes.
