Ocado is an online-only grocery retailer which delivers products to your doorstep. Ocado aims to give customers more choice than they would get from a regular supermarket. If you have already shopped for your groceries online with another supermarket, you can import your shopping list. Each week, there is a different set of enticing offers such as multibuys and meal deals which are designed to help you save money. Ocado has a Low Price Promise which means that prices are checked against Tesco.com and if you could have saved money by shopping at Tesco, you will automatically be sent a voucher up to the value of £10 for your next shop. As well as top-name brands, the Ocado price promise covers own-brand items including Ocado’s own and Waitrose essential. You can use other customers’ ratings and reviews to help pick your products.
Another aspect which makes shopping with Ocado different is that your shopping comes with a life guarantee so that you can always see how long everything will last (by looking at the website, the app or your receipt) and your groceries will always arrive as fresh as possible thanks to Ocado’s warehouse technology.
The use of Ocado’s technology doesn’t just extend to the food. With Favourites, the site will remember things that you have previously purchased and each time you place an order, the list will get smarter by remembering what you regularly like to buy. You can also place an order in a matter of seconds by using instant shop – the site will put together an order for you based on what you regularly buy. You can also create shopping lists, which are ideal for trying out new recipes or keeping track of what you purchase.
Ocado has its own range of essential products such as fresh fish and meat, organic fruit and vegetables as well as things for your food cupboard. Ocado aims to make the own-brand products great quality but also reasonably priced. There is also a home and garden range to help you kit out your home. Ocado also has a vast free-from range which includes gluten-free, dairy-free, lactose-free, nut-free, sugar-free, wheat-free, salt-free and yeast-free.
Fetch is Ocado’s dedicated pet store where you will find everything that you need to care for your pets, whether you own a cat, a dog, a ferret, a degu or are caring for a wild hedgehog. You’ll find everything from food to bedding, toys to treats. You can also see vet advice, get help with nutrition or purchase pet insurance. Pet insurance means that you no longer need to worry about vet bills should your pet get ill, as your dog, cat or rabbit can be covered for up to £12,000 a year. The pet insurance is supported by Aviva, one of the UK’s largest insurance groups.
When you order from Ocado, you can choose from a one-hour timeslot for your shopping to be delivered. The timeslots are on the hour and half-hour and are available seven days a week (including Sundays and Bank Holidays). If you choose to have your shopping delivered on a Wednesday, this is free when you spend over £75. When you have placed an order, you will be sent text messages relating to your delivery as well as a further update on the day that your order is due to be delivered. If you like a routine, you can opt into Ocado Reserved which means you never have to worry about losing your favourite timeslot as Ocado will automatically reserve your timeslot on a weekly or fortnightly basis.
Ocado Smartpass is the best way to shop at Ocado. You will save 10% on popular brands, get priority access to Christmas deliveries and receive samples and gifts throughout the year. You will also receive a subscription to Ocadolife magazine. You don’t need to pay for delivery slots anymore as a Smartpass customer, except at Christmas.
Ocado has an extensive archive of recipes to suit everyone’s tastes. You can search for recipes by the type of food i.e. chicken, vegetarian or salad recipes. You can also find recipes by season i.e. winter warmers or BBQ. You can also find recipes by lifestyle i.e. healthy eating, back to school or 3o minutes or less. You will find everything from afternoon tea baking recipes to roast dinner recipes, as well as twists on classic family dishes and restaurant meals.
The Ocado app lets you shop wherever and whenever you would like, even if you’re not connected to the internet, straight from your mobile phone. The app is available to download on many phones from the relative app stores such as Blackberry App World, Apple App Store, Google Play, Windows store and Amazon Kindle. It has great features such as a barcode scanner and one-click additions.
Ocado was first founded in 2000 by three former merchant bankers. It officially began trading in 2002 in partnership with Waitrose. The retailer was first listed on the stock exchange in 2010. One year earlier, the Ocado app was first released for mobile phones, with a smartwatch app for the Apple Watch following in 2015.
Ocado operates solely online with a warehouse business model. There are 22 Ocado warehouses and picking centres. Since 2014, Ocado has been fulfilling Morrisons online grocery orders.
