In 1884, Polish refugee Michael Marks opened a Penny Bazaar at Kirkgate Market in Leeds. Later, in 1894, Marks invited cashier Tom Spencer to be his business partner in opening a permanent stall. Since this humble beginning, Marks and Spencer spread across the UK and eventually the world.
