About John Lewis
The original John Lewis store was based on Oxford Street, London and it specialised in drapery. It was opened by John Lewis himself in 1864. By 1905, Mr Lewis had acquired a second store, Peter Jones in London’s Sloane Square. The John Lewis Partnership concept was developed by John Spedan Lewis, the son of the founder- he thought of the idea whilst running the Peter Jones store and it came into fruition in 1920. The first John Lewis store outside London was opened in 1933 when the partnership took over Jessop & Son in Nottingham (the store stuck with this name for years until they rebranded to John Lewis in 2003)
Today, there are over 45 John Lewis stores in England, Wales and Scotland. This includes some ‘At Home’ stores which specifically sell home-related products. In November 2016, John Lewis opened a concession in New South Wales, Australia.
Over the course of recent years, John Lewis has become well-known for their Christmas adverts. This year, the advert features a dog bouncing on a trampoline.
