In the UK, eBay is one of the largest resources for buying and selling items. On the eBay website, you will find all manner of products from clothes to cars, games to technology, books to beauty. Items on eBay are sold by a range of independent sellers, but some retailers also have eBay shops where they will sell their stock at a discounted price in comparison to the shop’s price.
Unlike the Amazon Marketplace where orders are dispatched from Amazon’s warehouse, eBay sellers are completely in charge of their own orders. They receive feedback ratings from customers which are displayed on their profile page.
eBay’s selling system works in two ways: auction or buy it now. If the auction option is selected, sellers can set a starter price and buyers are invited to make bids on it for a certain period of time. At the end of the timeframe, the current high bidder will win the item. If the sellers opts for buy it now, they can set a price and someone will buy it for that price or the best offer that the seller accepts. Generally, listing an item as an auction is free if you set the starting price to 99p, but setting a buy it now price comes with a fee.
eBay Motors is the section of eBay dedicated to buying and selling cars, motorbikes, vans, car parts and accessories. If you’re looking for a vehicle, you can search by the make/model and your postcode. You can also search by transmission, mileage, year, condition and colour. The majority of the cars are collection only. If you need a part, you can enter your car’s registration number in order to ensure that you purchase the correct part for your make and model.
Whether you need a dress for a wedding, a night out or just for every day, eBay has plenty of new and secondhand options. You can purchase a dress from an individual seller or by visiting a retailer’s eBay boutique – Boohoo is just one of the retailers who have an eBay boutique where the stock is sold at a discounted price. You can search for a dress in the eBay search box – search by brand, size or style, or all three for the most accurate results. You’ll find dresses from individual sellers and eBay shops in the results in new and used conditions. You’ll be able to see pictures and view a description of the dress – check the description before you buy because if there is a mark that the seller has told you about and you try to return it after receiving the dress, you probably won’t get a refund as the seller described the mark at the point of sale. Dresses are available to bid on or at a buy it now price.
The eBay app is free to download for both Android and Apple phones. Using the eBay app, you can search for items and purchase them, get a notification when you have been outbid and set up listings to sell an item.
How to sell on eBay
Creating your listing to sell an item is quick and easy. eBay will help you fill in the listing by giving you recommendations based on similar listings. To start your listing, just click sell at the top of any page. You can choose whether you wish to sell it using the auction method or at a set price. Then you can set up a seller account – you just need a phone number and a method of automatic payment linked to your account for seller fees, as well as one for payment from customers – eBay recommends PayPal. Remember to answer all the questions you receive about your listing as this helps to build your relationship with potential customers. Once the listing has ended, the buyer has three days to pay – contact them if they haven’t. Ensure you receive the payment before you post the item. Pack the item properly so that it doesn’t arrive damaged and leave the buyer some feedback. That’s your first sale done!
eBay Resolution Centre
The eBay Resolution Centre is a way for buyers and sellers to contact each other when there is an issue with a transaction. To begin the process you need to tell eBay your problem: you bought an item and haven’t received it, an item doesn’t match the sellers description, you are a seller and you haven’t received payment yet or yourself and the buyer agree to cancel the transaction. Once you have chosen one of these options, you will be able to contact the buyer. eBay always recommends contacting a seller/buyer through the eBay resolution centre as it keeps the records of contact in one place.
eBay Local is a service which allows buyers and sellers to connect to their local area to find items such as furniture, books, technology and games. You’ll be able to pick items up from your local area, thus saving on delivery costs.
eBay was first founded in 1995 as AuctionWeb. Today, eBay is worth billions of dollars and has operations in over 30 countries around the world. The company has its headquarters in San Jose, California.
